Cognitively Guided Instruction is a primary level approach to teaching mathematics that was developed at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, Madison, Wisconsin. This extensively researched approach (Carpenter et al., 1999) strives to provide teachers with opportunities to understand how young children develop mathematical thinking.
